A heartwarming tale of community support unfolded in South Texas when a struggling cat sanctuary on the brink of closure was rescued by a TikTok influencer and his dedicated followers. The director of the sanctuary, Anissa Beal, described the event as nothing short of a “miracle.”
Spencer, known online as SB Mowing, has garnered a massive following by documenting his efforts to clean overgrown lawns and neglected properties for free. His altruistic work has attracted nearly 10 million followers on TikTok and over 2 million on YouTube. During a visit to Corpus Christi, Texas, in February, Spencer stumbled upon an injured cat while mowing a severely overgrown lawn. The cat, later named Esbee, was found with multiple puncture wounds that had become infected.
Spencer reached out to local rescues, and only Edgar and Ivy’s Cat Sanctuary, led by Beal, accepted the injured feline. Beal emphasized the urgency of Esbee’s condition, noting that without immediate treatment, he would have succumbed to sepsis within 48 hours.
Deeply moved by the sanctuary’s efforts, Spencer donated $100 on the spot and initiated a GoFundMe campaign, hoping to raise $10,000 for the sanctuary. Beal, initially grateful for the $100, was astonished when Spencer’s followers responded overwhelmingly. The campaign quickly raised $190,000, and the community also sent four truckloads of items from the sanctuary’s Amazon wishlist.
Before this unexpected windfall, Beal had been funding the sanctuary primarily out of her own pocket, spending about $80,000 annually on medications and supplies. She was on the verge of shutting down the sanctuary due to financial strain. The donations not only saved the sanctuary but also allowed it to expand its efforts significantly.
In gratitude, Edgar and Ivy’s Cat Sanctuary honored Spencer by naming their newest building the SB Mowing Community Wellness Center. Spencer humbly attributed the success to his community rather than himself.
Esbee, the once critically injured cat, has since made a full recovery and now resides permanently at the sanctuary. Despite numerous adoption requests, Beal decided to keep Esbee at the sanctuary to ensure his safety.
Thanks to the generous donations, Edgar and Ivy’s Cat Sanctuary has rescued over 700 cats and is poised to save many more in the future. Esbee, the cat who inspired this incredible outpouring of support, now enjoys his days as the alpha male of the sanctuary.
